In a significant move affecting how monthly energy bills are paid, the power utilities in Telangana – TGSPDCL and TGNPDCL – have directed consumers to make payments exclusively through their official website or mobile app. This change, effective from Monday, July 1, eliminates the use of popular payment gateways and banks.
End of Third-Party Payment Gateways
As per the directives of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), TGSPDCL and TGNPDCL have ceased accepting payments through gateways like PhonePe, Paytm, AmazonPay, and GooglePay, as well as various banks. This decision will impact a large number of urban consumers who have relied on these platforms for their monthly bill payments.
Official Statement and Consumer Reactions
The power utility authorities confirmed that the decision aligns with RBI’s directives issued to power utilities nationwide. A social media announcement by TGSPDCL triggered mixed reactions among consumers. Many expressed their frustration, labeling the move as a “harsh step.” Several consumers pointed out the absence of an app for iPhone users and suggested making the bill payments compliant with Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS). Some even remarked that this decision contradicts the objectives of the Digital India initiative.
Official Clarification from TGSPDCL
Md. Musharraf Faruqui, Chairman and Managing Director of TGSPDCL, explained that the new system aims to avoid third-party unified payment interfaces (UPIs). Previously, consumers could pay bills directly through UPIs, but this is no longer possible. Instead, consumers must use the bill payment interface on the utility’s website or app. Faruqui also clarified that the TGSPDCL app is available for iPhone users, addressing one of the major concerns raised by consumers.
How to Pay Electricity Bills Now
Consumers must now follow these steps to pay their electricity bills:
- Visit the TGSPDCL or TGNPDCL Official Website: Navigate to the bill payment section.
- Use the Official Mobile App: Download the TGSPDCL app from the iStore (for iPhone users) or Google Play Store (for Android users).
- Utilize the Bill Payment Interface: Payments can still be made using UPIs, but only through the official interfaces provided by the utilities.
Implications and Consumer Guidance
This move by TGSPDCL and TGNPDCL aims to streamline payment processes and ensure compliance with RBI regulations. While it may initially cause inconvenience, the utilities have ensured that secure and compliant methods are available. Consumers are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the official website and mobile app to avoid any disruption in their bill payment routines.
