West Bengal marked a new milestone in its suburban railway network with the introduction of its first-ever air-conditioned (AC) local train. Manufactured by the Chennai-based Integral Coach Factory (ICF), this modern Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) has been allocated to the Sealdah Division of Eastern Railway (ER) and is set to redefine daily commuting in the state.

Route, Travel Time, and Speed
The inaugural AC local service operates between Sealdah and Ranaghat, covering the journey in just 1 hour and 40 minutes. Running at a maximum speed of 110 kmph, the service is designed as a galloping train—making fewer stops at key stations to ensure faster travel.
Coach Composition and Capacity
The rake comprises 12 fully air-conditioned stainless-steel coaches, offering seating for 1,126 passengers. Built with passenger safety and comfort in mind, the coaches feature spacious interiors and end-to-end vestibule connectivity, allowing easy movement between compartments.
Stops and Fare Structure
The AC EMU halts at important stations, including Chakdah, Kalyani, Kanchrapara, Naihati, Barrackpore, Khardah, Sodepur, Dumdum, and Bidhannagar. Fares are set at an affordable ₹120 for the full route, with the lowest ticket priced at ₹35. For regular travelers, options include daily, weekly, fortnightly, and monthly passes.
Key Features
- Safety: All doors are electrically operated and open only at stations, enhancing passenger safety.
- Surveillance: Coaches are equipped with CCTV cameras and a talk-back system for contacting the Driver/Guard in emergencies.
- Passenger Information: GPS-enabled LED displays provide real-time updates.
- Comfort: Double-sealed glass windows offer panoramic views while keeping the interiors quiet and insulated.
Commercial Operations
The train will officially begin commercial runs from Ranaghat on Monday, August 11, 2025. Operating during morning and evening peak hours, it aims to cater to office-goers, school students, business professionals, and other daily commuters seeking a reliable and comfortable mode of transportation.
With its blend of speed, safety, and comfort—at prices accessible to the general public—the Sealdah-Ranaghat AC EMU is not just a transportation upgrade, but a step toward modernizing West Bengal’s suburban rail services.
