In response to the alarming increase in road accidents in Pune, the police have proposed a significant measure: immediate revocation of driving licenses for those caught driving under the influence of alcohol. This proposal is a response to the persistent issue of drunk driving, which continues to be a major cause of accidents despite existing fines and penalties.

Driving License Should Be Cancelled For Drunk Drivers: Pune Police To Court

Current Penalties for Drunk Driving

Currently, first-time offenders in Pune face a fine of ₹10,000. Repeat offenders face a ₹20,000 fine and possible imprisonment. However, these penalties have not been effective in curbing the incidence of drunk driving. The recent spate of severe accidents has highlighted the need for more stringent measures.

Recent Incidents Highlighting the Issue

Several recent incidents have brought the issue of drunk driving to the forefront. In Kalyani Nagar, a Porsche driver under the influence hit two engineers. Just days later, another drunk driver struck two police officers on the Pune-Mumbai highway and then went home to sleep, showcasing the audacity of such offenders. Additionally, a tragic hit-and-run incident at Swargate claimed the life of 34-year-old Chartered Accountant Sagar Suresh Mantri, raising serious concerns about road safety.

The Call for Immediate Action

The police’s proposal to revoke driving licenses immediately is aimed at deterring drunk driving more effectively. By removing the ability to drive, the police hope to prevent repeat offenses and reduce the number of accidents. The absence of CCTV cameras at key locations, like the grade separator at Swargate, has complicated investigations, emphasizing the need for preventive measures rather than reactive ones.

The Role of the Courts

The success of this proposal now rests with the courts. If approved, this measure could set a precedent for other cities facing similar issues. The police believe that harsher penalties, including the immediate revocation of licenses, will serve as a stronger deterrent and ultimately save lives.

Conclusion

The proposal to revoke driving licenses immediately for drunk driving offenses marks a significant step in Pune’s efforts to enhance road safety. The increasing number of accidents linked to drunk driving has made it clear that existing penalties are insufficient. Stricter measures are necessary to curb this dangerous behavior and protect the lives of both drivers and pedestrians.
