Pune is currently witnessing an unusual fallout of its ongoing LPG shortage—social media platforms are flooded with posts to buy and sell gas cylinders, often outside legal channels. What started as a supply issue has now evolved into a chaotic digital marketplace driven by urgency and panic.

Desperate Users Flood Social Media With Requests For LPG Cylinder

Desperation Drives Online Buying & Selling

Amid delays in LPG deliveries, residents have taken to platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp to source cylinders. Posts range from people offering full, half-used, or empty cylinders to urgent requests from buyers struggling to cook daily meals.

Some listings show cylinders being sold for ₹900 to ₹3,500, depending on availability and condition. In many cases, sellers are trying to offload partially used cylinders or exchange them for empty ones—something not permitted under official norms.

A Growing Risk of Scams and Illegal Trade

Authorities have raised serious concerns over this trend. Selling LPG cylinders outside authorized channels is illegal, and several users have already reported suspicious or fraudulent listings.

One resident nearly lost money after being asked to transfer payment online for a cylinder that may not have existed. Officials warn that such desperation is making consumers easy targets for scams.

What’s Causing the Shortage?

The surge in online trading is rooted in a supply-demand mismatch. LPG distributors in Pune are struggling with:

  • Thousands of pending bookings
  • Reduced supply from oil companies
  • Delays in imported LPG availability

Some agencies reportedly have over 6,000 pending orders, making it difficult to meet the mandated 96-hour delivery timeline.

Government Clarifies: No Need to Panic

Despite the chaos, the Pune district administration insists that there is no complete supply breakdown. LPG cylinders are still being delivered through an OTP-based system with a 25-day refill rule.

Officials have urged citizens to avoid panic buying and refrain from engaging in illegal transactions. Strict action, including license suspension, may be taken against violators.

Bigger Concern: Panic Over Reality

The real issue may not just be shortage—but panic amplified by social media. As misinformation spreads, more people rush to secure cylinders through unofficial means, worsening the situation further.

A Warning Sign for Urban Supply Chains

This incident highlights how quickly essential services can spiral into disorder when supply chains falter. More importantly, it shows how digital platforms can both help and harm during crises.
