In a significant push towards inclusive mobility, Indian Railways has launched its Amrit Bharat trains, aimed at offering low-cost, high-speed travel. With 100 trains planned, these non-AC push-pull trains will connect major routes across the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently flagged off the first four trains, calling it a “gift of modern transport” to the common citizen.

Designer Of Vande Bharat Trains Not Happy With Amrit Bharat Trains: Non AC Trains Outdated For India?

The Make-up of Amrit Bharat Trains

Each Amrit Bharat train includes:

  • 12 non-AC sleeper class coaches
  • 8 general class coaches
  • Push-pull design with engines at both ends for better acceleration

While these trains are being marketed as faster alternatives to traditional express trains, their affordability remains their biggest appeal.

Not Everyone Is Impressed

However, Sudhanshu Mani, the architect behind the iconic Vande Bharat Express, is not convinced. He calls the concept of non-AC trains “outdated” for a developed India. In his view:

  • Even the poor deserve air-conditioned travel
  • Trains like Garib Rath once offered AC travel at subsidised fares—a better model, according to him
  • India should phase out non-AC sleeper trains in favor of modern, comfortable alternatives

Can Railways Afford This Shift?

A major concern is revenue loss. But Mani believes that premium trains like Vande Bharat can subsidise the cost of cheaper AC travel for economically weaker passengers. He argues that speed and efficiency should be the focus:

  • Increase Vande Bharat’s speed to 120–150 km/h
  • Let passengers pay a premium for speed, creating a tiered system that supports affordability

The Bigger Debate: Affordability vs Modernisation

The launch of Amrit Bharat trains opens up a wider conversation—should India continue to invest in basic, non-AC infrastructure or push for a futuristic, all-AC model with government support for the underprivileged?

As Indian Railways balances scale, speed, and social equity, this debate will shape the future of public transport in a developing—if not already developed—India.
