Smartphone company Nothing is set to build its upcoming device Phone (2) in India, which is scheduled to be launched next month.
Build in Tamil Nadu
The manufacturing will take place at its facility BYD Electronics, a Shenzhen-based manufacturer in Tamil Nadu.
“Phone (2) is going to be manufactured in India – Tamil Nadu. The phones manufactured in India will be for consumption in India,” Nothing India VP and GM Manu Sharma said.
This isn’t the first time Nothing has chosen to manufacture its phone in India, as the previous model, the Nothing Phone (1), was also produced there.
The company started making its smartphones in India last year with the first version of Phone (1).
Fulfilling demand in India and abroad
“It is very important for us to be accessible to the Indian market, to build the demand and manage supplies.
We wanted to be close to the market.
Our Phone (1) has been very successful in India and globally as well.
Our demand is such that large volumes are manufactured right here in India,” Sharma said.
Building other products as well
Nothing is also in talks with other manufacturing partners to make its other products
“As we continue to manufacture our phone in India, we will continue to evaluate opportunities for other products as well,” Sharma said.
Most sustainable smartphone
The company will be using recycled material in Phone (2), making it its most sustainable product.
“We will use 100% recycled copper, steel, tin, etc, and the 80% of plastic used in the Phone (2),” Sharma added.
They also tweeted that the phone’s parts and components would be made from recycled materials and sustainable plastic.
The upcoming device is also said to have a carbon footprint of 53.45kg, which is 5kg lower than that of the Phone (1), making it environmentally friendly.
