Indian Railways is currently undergoing a major transformation, upgrading its existing fleet and introducing new trains. Among its most notable innovations is the Vande Bharat train, which has played a pivotal role in modernizing the railway network. Recently, the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai unveiled fully air-conditioned sleeper coaches for long-distance journeys, a major advancement in the Vande Bharat project. Previously, Vande Bharat trains only offered chair car configurations, but the introduction of sleeper coaches now enhances passenger comfort and safety with state-of-the-art interiors and upgraded safety features.

Vande Bharat vs Rajdhani Express: A Comparison of Speed and Comfort

Since its launch in 2018, 77 Vande Bharat Express trains have been operating across the country, and the project’s success has sparked healthy competition with other premium trains, such as the Rajdhani Express. Here’s a comparison between the two.

By September 2024, Indian Railways had launched 102 Vande Bharat services, with the train reaching a top speed of 160 km/h, exceeding the Rajdhani Express’s maximum of 140 km/h. The new Vande Bharat sleeper coaches, while similar to the chair car versions, are designed for enhanced performance and feature superior braking systems and high-quality interiors made from durable materials like GFRP (Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer).

Vande Bharat Sleeper vs Rajdhani: Comfort and Innovation Compared

The Vande Bharat sleeper coaches prioritize passenger comfort, offering features such as cushioned side berths for improved sleep quality. The train includes advanced amenities like bio-vacuum toilets, touch-free fittings, automatic doors, and a GPS-based information system. While the Rajdhani Express also provides high-quality facilities, such as vacuum-assisted flushing toilets, Vande Bharat goes further by offering special provisions for differently-abled passengers.

Both the Vande Bharat and Rajdhani trains are equipped with modern toilet systems. Vande Bharat offers ergonomically designed, odour-free toilets with bio-vacuum technology and touch-free features. Similarly, the Rajdhani Express provides advanced amenities, including vacuum-assisted flushing and touch-free soap dispensers. Overall, the Vande Bharat sleeper trains enhance the travel experience by incorporating advanced technology and exceptional comfort, establishing new benchmarks for long-distance rail travel in India.
