OpenAI has rolled out a bold initiative to attract more Indian users by offering ChatGPT Go free for an entire year, beginning November 4.
The company described India as its second-largest and fastest-growing market, making it a critical region in OpenAI’s global expansion strategy.

This announcement comes just ahead of OpenAI’s first DevDay Exchange event in India, signaling the company’s deepening engagement with the Indian developer and AI enthusiast community.
What Is ChatGPT Go?
ChatGPT Go is OpenAI’s mid-tier subscription plan, introduced as an affordable bridge between the free version and ChatGPT Plus. Launched in India in August 2025 at ₹399 per month, ChatGPT Go offers:
- Higher message and usage limits
- Increased daily image generation and uploads
- Extended memory for context-aware and personalized responses
The plan gives users access to advanced AI capabilities without the premium pricing of ChatGPT Plus.
Competition Heating Up in India’s AI Space
OpenAI’s move mirrors similar user acquisition strategies by its rivals.
- Google recently made its AI Pro membership (worth ₹19,500) free for Indian students for a year.
- Perplexity AI partnered with Airtel to offer complimentary access to its premium tier.
With these offers flooding the market, OpenAI’s latest step ensures it remains a dominant player in India’s fast-growing AI ecosystem.
India at the Center of OpenAI’s Global Growth
Nick Turley, VP and Head of ChatGPT, stated, “Since launching ChatGPT Go in India, the creativity and adoption we’ve seen has been inspiring.”
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman also emphasized India’s pivotal role in the company’s growth, noting that paid ChatGPT subscriptions in India have doubled since ChatGPT Go’s launch.
