OpenAI is preparing to take ChatGPT beyond one-on-one conversations with its latest features — group chats and direct messages (DMs) — both currently in beta testing. The move signals OpenAI’s broader ambition to transform ChatGPT into a multifunctional “everything app”, blending collaboration, communication, and AI-powered productivity in one place.

Group Chats and DMs: What’s Coming Next

According to early leaks and internal previews, group chats will allow multiple users to converse with ChatGPT within a shared thread. Each participant will be able to ask questions, brainstorm ideas, and interact with the AI collectively — making it useful for teams, classrooms, and collaborative projects.

The new DM feature will let users communicate privately with each other inside the ChatGPT platform, much like a built-in messaging service. Users will be able to send invites via links to join either personal or group conversations, creating a seamless experience between AI assistance and human collaboration.

Tibor Blaho, Lead Engineer at AIPRM, shared the first preview of Group Chats in the ChatGPT web app on X (formerly Twitter), confirming that the feature is already being tested by select users. The interface shows a distinct layout for personal and group interactions, ensuring clarity between private and shared spaces.

Part of OpenAI’s Expanding Ecosystem

These developments come shortly after OpenAI unveiled Sora 2, its advanced AI video generation model, and a TikTok-like video app named Sora. Together, these releases indicate OpenAI’s goal of building a tightly integrated ecosystem that merges text, visuals, and interactivity — effectively positioning ChatGPT as a central hub for communication, creativity, and content creation.

By introducing group chats and DMs, OpenAI is taking a page from social and collaborative platforms like Slack, Discord, and Notion, but with the unique advantage of real-time AI assistance built in.
