Following a stampede at Delhi Railway Station, the Indian Railways has introduced a new safety measure to restrict the entry of non-passengers. Under this scheme, only ticketed passengers will be allowed on platforms using QR code verification. The decision is part of efforts to manage overcrowding and enhance passenger security.

Trial Implementation at Select Stations

The initiative will be implemented on a trial basis at railway stations being developed under the World Class and Amrit Bharat Scheme. Initially, three major stations in the Ambala division—Mohali, Chandigarh, and Ambala—have been included.

Railway officials have confirmed that the system will be expanded to stations with a daily footfall of over 15,000 passengers. This phased rollout ensures effective monitoring and optimization.

How the QR Code System Works

A unique QR code will be issued on each passenger’s ticket. Upon arrival at the station, the QR code will be scanned at the entrance, opening a boom barrier to grant access to the platform. This digital access system aims to streamline entry and prevent unauthorized access.

Boom Barriers for Controlled Access

Boom barriers will be installed on both sides of the stations to monitor entry and exit points. The QR code-based verification will eliminate the need for manual checking, ensuring faster and more efficient movement of passengers.

Ensuring Passenger Safety and Reducing Congestion

This measure aligns with the Railways’ broader efforts to ensure passenger safety and minimize the risk of overcrowding. By limiting platform access to ticketed passengers only, authorities aim to reduce congestion, especially during peak travel hours.

Conclusion

The QR code access system is a significant step towards enhancing security and managing large crowds at railway stations. If successful, the model will likely be expanded to other stations across the country, ensuring a safer and more organized railway experience for passengers.
