Canada Announces 2 Year Cap in Approval of Study Permits
This cap will decrease the approval of study permits by 35%. In 2022, there were more than 800,000 foreign students, which has hiked from 214,000 in the last decade.
Immigration Minister Marc Miller stated that in 2023, Canada plans to approve 360,000 undergraduate study permits. Additionally, every province and territory will receive a portion of this intake based on population and current student intake.
As per reports, the cap will be applicable to students at diploma or undergraduate levels. Students applying for permit renewals will not be affected by this cap.
Additionally, from September, the government will not give work permits for students who graduate from colleges that operate under a public-private partnership model. These type of models are operational mostly in the province of Ontario.
As per Miller, “It’s unacceptable that some private institutions have taken advantage of international students by operating under-resourced campuses, lacking supports for students and charging high tuition fees, all while significantly increasing their intake of international students.”
Cap Implemented To Ensure Private Institutions Will Offer Quality Education
This change has been introduced so that private institutions will offer quality education. This will also ensure that international students will not be taken advantage of.
As per Miller, the new rules are “not against individual international students,” instead, they will make that future students will receive a “quality of education that they signed up for.”
Canada’s home prices are averaging C$750,000, and this new cap will be a part of efforts to address the continuously increasing housing market.
As per Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, a national housing agency, Canada needs as many as 3.5 million more housing units by 2030 so that affordable housing will be possible. Population growth has skyrocketed with a majority contribution from newcomers.
