Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has joined forces with Viasat, a global satellite communications company, to support the next phase of the Indian Navy’s satellite communication (SATCOM) modernisation programme. The initiative is set to begin later in January 2026 and aims to deliver enhanced, secure and resilient connectivity for naval operations.

BSNL, ViaSat Will Upgrade Satellite Communication For Indian Navy

What The Upgrade Involves

Under the agreement with the Indian Defence Forces, BSNL and Viasat will deploy high-capacity Ka-band satellite systems alongside the Navy’s existing L-band infrastructure. This multi-band, multi-constellation SATCOM strategy is designed to:

  • Expand geographical coverage across maritime zones
  • Increase data throughput and speed for communication links
  • Improve reliability and resilience for mission-critical operations

The combination of L-band’s wide coverage and Ka-band’s high-speed capabilities aims to ensure more secure and adaptable communication networks for naval platforms.

Technology And Strategic Importance

Ka-band frequencies offer higher throughput and capacity, which supports richer data exchange for radar, command and control, and real-time operations. Meanwhile, L-band remains valuable for robust long-range coverage. Together, they deliver a powerful and flexible communication backbone tailored to modern defence requirements.

BSNL’s role includes leveraging its Gateway Earth Station infrastructure, while Viasat contributes its global satellite network and expertise through its international government communications division. The equipment for this upgrade has already arrived in India, and installation activities are expected to begin this month.

Statements From Partners

BSNL’s chairman highlighted that the collaboration reflects the company’s commitment to supporting India’s strategic communication needs, particularly in the defence domain. Viasat officials emphasised their pride in aiding the Indian Navy’s transition toward advanced SATCOM capabilities and reaffirmed their long-term support for India’s maritime communication ecosystem.

Broader Implications For Defence Communication

The upgrade signals a shift toward a more tech-driven, integrated communication approach for the Indian armed forces. By adopting cutting-edge satellite technologies, the Indian Navy can expect:

  • Better situational awareness
  • Faster data exchange in critical missions
  • Enhanced support for remote and hard-to-reach operations

This modernisation is part of India’s broader push to strengthen its defence infrastructure using advanced communication systems, ensuring that naval forces remain connected and operationally effective in diverse environments.
