The Indian government has clarified that there are no plans to privatise state-run telecom firms Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL). Minister of State for Rural Development and Communications, Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar, confirmed this in Parliament. Instead, the government is focused on strengthening and expanding their networks, ensuring that these public-sector companies remain competitive in the telecom industry.

Financial Boost for BSNL and MTNL
To enhance operations and improve network services, the government has approved Rs 6982 crore for BSNLs capital expenditure. Additionally, a financial package of Rs 6000 crore has been sanctioned to accelerate BSNL and MTNLs 4G expansion. These funds will be used to enhance connectivity across India, providing better telecom services to urban and rural areas.
Expanding 4G Network Nationwide
As part of the expansion plan, 100000 new 4G sites will be deployed nationwide. This initiative will help improve network coverage, enhance service quality, and strengthen Indias telecom infrastructure.
To optimise resources, BSNL and MTNL have entered a 10-year 4G network-sharing agreement, which will allow both companies to utilise existing infrastructure efficiently while expanding their services.
Over Rs 3.22 Trillion Already Invested in Revival
The Indian government has committed over Rs 3.22 trillion through three revival packages to support BSNL and MTNL. This funding has played a crucial role in stabilising these telecom firms and positioning them for future growth.
Impact on the Indian Telecom Sector
- Stronger Public Telecom Infrastructure: The financial support ensures BSNL and MTNL can compete with private players.
- Better Network Coverage: The expansion will provide improved telecom services to users nationwide.
- Efficient Resource Utilisation: The 4G network-sharing agreement will reduce costs and enhance efficiency.
Conclusion
The governments decision to reject BSNL and MTNLs privatisation signals a commitment to strengthening Indias public telecom sector. With substantial funding, a nationwide 4G expansion, and strategic partnerships, these companies are set to improve connectivity and service quality.
