Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has launched the construction of a ₹542-crore underground tunnel designed to connect two of Patna’s most prominent cultural institutions — the Bihar Museum and the Patna Museum.

The project was formally initiated when the chief minister activated the tunnelling machine during a ceremony near Hartali Mor on Nehru Path in Patna. Officials say the tunnel will significantly improve accessibility for visitors interested in exploring Bihar’s historical and archaeological heritage.

Seamless Movement Between Two Museums

The tunnel will provide a direct underground link between the two museums, allowing visitors to move easily from one museum to the other without having to travel on busy city roads.

Once completed, tourists will be able to explore exhibits across both museums as part of a single visit. Authorities believe the project will make museum visits more convenient and increase overall tourist footfall in the city.

The government expects the project to transform the way visitors experience Bihar’s rich history by creating a unified cultural corridor.

Boost for Tourism and Cultural Heritage

The Bihar Museum, opened in recent years as a modern cultural institution, showcases artefacts related to the state’s ancient civilisation and history. Meanwhile, the Patna Museum, established in 1917, houses several rare historical artefacts including ancient sculptures and archaeological findings.

By connecting these two institutions through an underground passage, the government hopes to create a world-class heritage experience that can attract more domestic and international tourists.

Officials say the tunnel project will help strengthen Patna’s reputation as an important cultural and historical destination in India.

Additional Facilities Planned

Along with the tunnel, authorities are also planning improved parking facilities, visitor amenities, and surrounding infrastructure to accommodate the expected rise in tourists.

The chief minister also directed officials to ensure that the construction work progresses smoothly and is completed within the scheduled timeline without disrupting traffic in nearby areas.

A Step Toward Modern Cultural Infrastructure

The tunnel project reflects the Bihar government’s broader focus on preserving heritage while modernising tourism infrastructure. By integrating two major museums through a dedicated underground corridor, the project aims to offer visitors a seamless and immersive cultural journey.

Once completed, the tunnel is expected to become a unique attraction in Patna and an important addition to India’s museum infrastructure.
