OnePlus has confirmed the launch of its first foldable smartphone, possibly named OnePlus Open on October 19.
Robin Liu, OnePlus CEO of North America made the announcement at the TechCrunch Disrupt 2023 event, assuring upcoming details “will be available soon on the official OnePlus website, OnePlus forums, and social media channels”.
The company claims that the new device is “set to redefine the concept of foldable smartphones by delivering all-around flagship-level experiences in a compact foldable form factor”.
Expected features
The device is expected to come with a standard 6.3-inch AMOLED cover screen with a brisk 120Hz refresh rate and a 7.8-inch 2K AMOLED inner display.
Like the current flagship OnePlus 11, the new OnePlus Open is expected to come with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor.
It may feature 16GB RAM, 256GB (and more) storage and a big battery with fast charging support.
Sturdiness
The company has prioritized durability– the device features a sturdy hinge to hold the two display panels.
It has also undergone rigorous tests to handle open and fold operations several times a day and ensure its usability for several years.
Camera
Coming to the camera, it is expected to feature a triple rear camera setup comprising a 50 MP sensor with optical image stabilization (OIS), a 48 MP sensor with an ultra-wide lens, and a 32 MP sensor with a periscope lens.
On the front there may be dual 32 MP camera sensors.
Launch, pricing
It was expected to debut around late August but this was delayed due to issues with the BOE display and the brand switching to Samsung panels.
It might debut in China first and then release in other global markets including India.
It is tipped to be priced under Rs. 1,20,000 which puts it in the middle of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5, which is priced at Rs 1,54,999 and the Tecno Phantom V Fold priced at Rs. 88,888.
