The Karnataka government has unveiled an ambitious infrastructure project — the Bengaluru Business Corridor (BBC) — a 73-kilometre, signal-free expressway designed to decongest India’s tech capital and improve connectivity across its outskirts.

This eight-lane access-controlled corridor, earlier known as the Peripheral Ring Road, is being positioned as a long-term solution to Bengaluru’s worsening traffic crisis.

A High-Speed, Signal-Free Expressway

The proposed corridor will function as a fully access-controlled, signal-free highway, ensuring uninterrupted travel without traffic signals or local interference.

Key features include:

  • 8-lane expressway with service roads
  • No direct intersections or signals
  • Entry/exit only via designated interchanges
  • Designed for high-speed, long-distance travel

This setup will allow vehicles—especially heavy trucks—to bypass city traffic entirely, reducing congestion on major roads like Outer Ring Road.


11 Strategic Interchanges Planned

A standout feature of the project is the development of 11 major interchanges, most of them designed in cloverleaf patterns for seamless movement.

These interchanges will connect the corridor to key arterial roads, including:

  • Tumakuru Road
  • Ballari Road
  • Old Madras Road
  • Sarjapur Road
  • Hosur Road
  • Hennur Road and Doddaballapur Road

These junctions will act as critical entry and exit points, ensuring smooth integration with Bengaluru’s existing road network.


Route and Connectivity

The corridor will form a loop around the city, linking major economic and residential hubs.

  • Starts near Tumakuru Road (northwest Bengaluru)
  • Passes through Yelahanka, Whitefield, and Sarjapur
  • Connects to Hosur Road near Electronic City
  • Integrates with NICE Road to complete a ring

This design will create a continuous transport spine, improving connectivity between key zones without entering the city core.


Impact on Traffic and Economy

With nearly 1 crore vehicles on Bengaluru’s roads, the corridor is expected to:

  • Divert long-distance and freight traffic away from city roads
  • Reduce congestion on key IT corridors
  • Cut travel time significantly
  • Boost real estate and industrial growth in outskirts

Experts believe the project could transform mobility and logistics in the region while unlocking new economic zones.


Project Scale and Timeline

The Bengaluru Business Corridor is part of a ₹27,000 crore mega infrastructure push and is expected to be implemented in phases due to land acquisition challenges.

Authorities are targeting completion over the next few years, with phased construction already underway in certain stretches.
