Karnataka has taken a significant step toward building a second airport in Bengaluru by floating a tender to appoint a consultant for a detailed feasibility and strategy report. The move signals growing urgency to address rising air traffic in one of India’s busiest aviation hubs.

Why Bengaluru Needs a Second Airport

Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport has emerged as one of India’s busiest airports, handling rapidly increasing passenger and cargo traffic.

With demand expected to grow further due to the city’s booming IT and startup ecosystem, the existing infrastructure is nearing capacity. The proposed second airport aims to decongest operations and support long-term growth.

Tender Floated: What Happens Next?

Infrastructure Development Minister M B Patil confirmed that a tender has been issued to hire a consultancy firm that will prepare a comprehensive feasibility and strategy report.

The study will evaluate:

  • Technical feasibility of shortlisted locations
  • Financial viability and cost estimates
  • Land requirements and regulatory approvals
  • Environmental and connectivity factors

The selected consultant will play a crucial role in determining whether the project is viable and which location is most suitable.

Shortlisted Locations Under Evaluation

The Karnataka government has already identified three potential sites for the new airport:

  • Choodahalli (Kanakapura Road)
  • Somanahalli (Kanakapura Road)
  • Near Nelamangala (Kunigal Road)

These sites will now undergo detailed scrutiny as part of the feasibility study to assess infrastructure readiness and long-term sustainability.

Key Challenges Ahead

Despite progress, the project faces multiple hurdles:

  • A legal clause restricts building another airport within 150 km of the existing airport until 2033, unless special approvals are obtained
  • Terrain, environmental clearances, and airspace constraints could complicate site selection
  • High land acquisition costs may impact overall project feasibility

These factors make the feasibility report critical before any final decision is taken.

Timeline and Long-Term Vision

The feasibility report is expected to guide future steps such as land acquisition, approvals, and construction planning. If all goes as planned, development could begin after regulatory clearances, with long-term completion aligned around the early 2030s.

Bigger Picture: Bengaluru’s Next Growth Engine

The second airport is not just an infrastructure project—it is a strategic investment in Bengaluru’s future. It is expected to boost connectivity, attract global businesses, and strengthen the city’s position as India’s tech capital.
