Apple has unveiled the MacBook Neo, a new entry-level laptop designed to make the Mac ecosystem more accessible. Starting at $599, the MacBook Neo is the most affordable laptop Apple has ever released and represents a major shift in the company’s strategy toward the budget PC market.

The device is aimed at students, first-time Mac buyers and price-sensitive users, a segment traditionally dominated by Chromebooks and lower-cost Windows laptops.

A Major Price Shift for Apple

For years, the cheapest Mac laptop started around $999, making Apple computers significantly more expensive than many competing devices. The new MacBook Neo cuts that entry price nearly in half.

Apple hopes this aggressive pricing will expand Mac adoption globally, especially in education markets where Chromebooks currently dominate.

The laptop is available for pre-order immediately, with official sales expected to begin March 11, 2026.

Powered by an iPhone Chip

Unlike other Macs that use Apple’s M-series processors, the MacBook Neo runs on the A18 Pro chip, the same processor used in the iPhone 16 Pro lineup.

This makes it the first Mac to use an iPhone-grade chip, helping Apple keep costs lower while still delivering solid performance for everyday tasks such as browsing, document editing and streaming.

The laptop includes:

  • 8GB unified memory
  • 256GB or 512GB storage options
  • Support for macOS Tahoe and Apple’s AI features.

Display, Design and Colors

The MacBook Neo features a 13-inch Liquid Retina display with a resolution of 2408 × 1506 pixels and brightness up to 500 nits.

Apple has also introduced several new colors inspired by earlier products like the iBook, including:

  • Silver
  • Indigo
  • Blush
  • Citrus.

The laptop weighs about 2.7 pounds (1.23 kg) and is designed to be thin and lightweight for portability.

Trade-Offs to Keep the Price Low

To achieve the lower price point, Apple has made a few compromises compared with higher-end MacBooks.

For example:

  • The keyboard does not include backlighting
  • Memory cannot be upgraded beyond 8GB
  • Only two USB-C ports are included.

Despite these limitations, the device still offers features like a 1080p FaceTime camera, Wi-Fi 6E, Touch ID (on higher storage models), and up to 16 hours of battery life.

Apple’s Strategy Behind the Neo

The MacBook Neo is part of Apple’s broader push to expand its hardware lineup across different price segments. Alongside this laptop, Apple recently introduced other relatively affordable devices, including the iPhone 17e.

By offering a cheaper MacBook, Apple aims to attract millions of new users and compete more aggressively in the global budget laptop market.
