Apple has launched large-scale ground surveys in India to improve its ‘Look Around’ feature on Apple Maps, which provides users with 360-degree panoramic street views. The company is working with Tech Mahindra to collect high-quality map data across various states.

Data Collection Methods
Apple is using both vehicular and portable systems for its surveys:
- Vehicular Surveys: Conducted in states like Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Delhi, Haryana, Kerala, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh.
- Portable Surveys: In pedestrian areas, Apple is using backpack systems, iPhones, and iPads to capture street-level data in states including Delhi, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu.
Challenges with Street-Level Data Collection
Street view services have faced privacy concerns globally. Google’s past attempt at collecting similar data in India faced backlash due to security concerns. Additionally, Google admitted that its street view vehicles accidentally collected sensitive WiFi data, raising further privacy issues. To address such concerns, Apple blurs faces and license plates and offers users the ability to request further blurring within 15 minutes.
India’s Mapping Regulations and Foreign Firms
Indian mapping laws restrict foreign companies from providing high-precision maps independently. The 2021 Geospatial Data Guidelines mandate that foreign firms source high-accuracy data from Indian partners like Tech Mahindra. Indian companies also receive preferential access to local ground stations and real-time positioning services, reinforcing domestic control over geospatial data collection and processing.
Apple’s ongoing surveys in India mark a significant step in improving navigation technology while ensuring compliance with Indian geospatial regulations.
