Google recently launched the first Developer Preview (DP1) of Android 15. This initial build offers developers early access to test new features, APIs and design changes planned for the next major Android version launching later this year.
DP1 is currently only available for Google’s Pixel phones powered by its custom Tensor chipsets – Pixel 6 onwards. A second Developer Preview with more additions is expected in March 2023.
Public Beta Phase Starts April, Stability by June Following the Developer Previews, Google will kick off the public Beta phase for Android 15 starting April 2023.
There will be multiple Beta versions released over the next few months for early adopters to try out and submit feedback. The Beta 3 update coming in June is when Google plans to lock down all APIs and core functionality for final testing.
So developers have ample lead time to prep apps for compatibility with the new Android release before its debut on Pixel devices likely in October, around Google’s annual hardware launch event.
Mirrors Android 14 Timeline This Android 15 roadmap mirrors the release cycle for last year’s Android 14, which also saw an initial developer build in February followed by public betas and an October stable launch on new Pixels.
The transparent timeline gives developers predictability to build and optimize apps for new Android versions as adoption gradually ramps. It promises exciting additions to Android 15 set to be showcased across the coming months.
