Fascinating Facts About Mumbai Local Trains

While talking about Mumbai locals, there are many fascinating facts about Mumbai locals that make them an iconic symbol of the Mumbai City. Let’s go through some of them.

Everyday, Mumbai locals transport over 7.5 million passengers hence making it one of the busiest suburban railway networks in the world.

Its railway network spans 390 kilometres, with three main lines including the Western, Central, and Harbour lines, connecting the city’s farthest corners.

Considering the railway’s history in India, the first-ever train in the country ran between Mumbai and Thane on April 16, 1853, marking the beginning of Indian Railways.

In order to ensure the safety and convenience for female passengers, Mumbai introduced women-only local trains in 1992.

Despite the city’s population and chaos, Mumbai locals are renowned for their punctuality, with an average frequency of just 3–4 minutes during peak hours.
