Air India has introduced its first retrofitted narrowbody aircraft, VT-EXN, under a $400 million program by the Tata Group. Featuring a refreshed three-class cabin configuration, modern amenities, and enhanced passenger experience, the airline plans to retrofit all 27 A320neo planes by Q3 2025.

A Major Step in Transformation Air India has officially launched its first retrofitted narrowbody aircraft, VT-EXN, as part of its ambitious fleet transformation. The A320neo, acquired during the Tata Group’s takeover in 2022, now features a new cabin layout, improved seating, and enhanced in-flight comfort.

This retrofit is the first of 27 narrowbody planes undergoing upgrades, with completion targeted by the third quarter of 2025. The initiative reflects Air India’s commitment to providing a modern and comfortable flying experience.

Enhanced Cabin Configuration The retrofitted aircraft boasts a three-class configuration: Business, Premium Economy, and Economy. Passengers will benefit from new seats, carpets, curtains, and cabin panels that align with the airline’s refreshed branding. Notable amenities include portable electronic device holders, USB ports, and improved cabin lighting for a relaxing atmosphere.

Extensive Fleet Overhaul In addition to the A320neo retrofits, Air India is also focusing on its widebody fleet. The airline has announced plans to upgrade 40 B787 and B777 aircraft, with the first B787 set to undergo retrofitting next month. This comprehensive $400 million initiative underlines Air India’s efforts to modernize its operations and provide a superior flying experience.

Future Flight Plans The retrofitted narrowbody aircraft will primarily operate on domestic and short-haul international routes. Alongside the upgraded planes, 14 newly inducted A320neo aircraft with similar configurations will further strengthen Air India’s services.

Conclusion Air India’s fleet transformation marks a significant milestone in its journey toward excellence. With modern amenities, improved comfort, and a passenger-centric approach, the airline is well-positioned to enhance its competitive edge in the aviation industry. Passengers can expect a refreshed flying experience as the retrofitted planes take to the skies in the coming months.
