To enhance passenger safety and manage crowds efficiently, Indian Railways conducted a successful trial at New Delhi Railway Station, restricting unreserved passengers to a single platform for Maha Kumbh special trains. The initiative aimed to prevent overcrowding and ensure a smooth boarding experience.

Railway Minister Oversees Trial from War Room
The trial was conducted under the direct supervision of Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Railway Board Chairman Satish Kumar. Monitoring from the Rail Bhawan War Room, officials closely tracked crowd movements, ticket sales, and train scheduling to optimize passenger flow.
Managing Unreserved Passengers with Precision
- All Maha Kumbh special trains were scheduled from Platform 16.
- Unreserved passengers were directed to a holding area and allowed to enter only through a single gate.
- Ticket sales were monitored every 30 minutes to gauge passenger volume and dispatch trains accordingly.
Results and Future Planning
The strategy successfully prevented overcrowding on other platforms and ensured safer travel for devotees. The experience gained from this trial will help Indian Railways refine its crowd management techniques for future large-scale events like Maha Kumbh.
