In a latest update, Google seems to be all set to start making its flagship Pixel 8 phones in India, starting early 2024.
Tensor Chip Designed In India
As we know that at the heart of the flagship device is the latest iteration of the Tensor chip, designed in India for the world.
On October 24, CEO Sundar Pichai said, “Our portfolio of Pixel products is brought to life thanks to our foundational technology, AI, Android and Google Tensor,” during the company’s earnings call.
Adding, “We introduced our new Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel watch 2 to very positive customer feedback and reviews.”
These launches already took place at the start of this month.
It appears that Google’s move to start Pixel 8 production in India will be a boost for the country’s efforts to position itself as a global mobile manufacturing hub, as per the experts.
In addition to the Tensor, some of the other crucial components of the Pixel 8 phone are also designed in India.
Tensor Chip & Many More To Look Forward
On October 20, Union telecom minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that Google will start manufacturing Tensor chips in India within the next three years.
Here, the Tensor chip is a processor or new system-on-chip (SoC) used in Google pixel devices.
Further Vaishnaw said the American tech giant will also bring its first foldable phone, Pixel Fold, to India, while speaking on the sidelines of Google for India 2023 event in New Delhi.
Adding, “We had asked Google to start manufacturing Pixel phones in India last year. They have done it this year. Similarly, the company will start manufacturing other products in India.”
Besides this, the minister has informed that he has also asked Google to deepen the supply chain ecosystem in India.
Vaishnaw believes that India has great potential in mobile phone component manufacturing.
Talking about the same, he has expressed hope that components manufacturing will grow in the same way mobile manufacturing developed in the country.
As he visions India to become a hub for telecom equipment manufacturing and designing.
According to Vaishnaw, India is already exporting telecom equipment to 14 countries including the US.
