Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), India’s largest IT services firm, has announced the creation of a new Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Services Transformation unit. The move underscores the company’s increasing focus on AI as a critical growth driver in the global technology services industry.

Leadership and Structure

The unit will be led by Amit Kapur, a TCS veteran who currently oversees the UK and Ireland business. Effective September 1, Kapur will take charge as Chief AI and Services Transformation Officer, directly reporting to Aarthi Subramanian, Executive Director, President, and COO of TCS. The new unit consolidates TCS’ earlier AI initiatives, including the AI & Data unit carved out in Q4FY25.

Driving Innovation and Client Engagement

The restructuring aims to simplify client engagement, accelerate digital transformation, and deliver AI-powered integrated technology services across engineering, operations, and modernisation. The company also plans to strengthen its global TCS Pace Ports to bring real-world AI use cases closer to customers. By combining existing AI teams and capabilities, TCS intends to scale solutions and maximise impact for clients.

Industry Context and Expert View

The move comes close on the heels of TCS’ announcement to reduce its workforce by 2% this financial year, reflecting its shift toward becoming an agile, AI-led organisation. Industry experts view the restructuring as a significant step forward. Peter Bendor-Samuel, founder and chairman of Everest Group, said TCS had been conservative in its AI strategy compared to aggressive rivals like Accenture and Cognizant. He noted that this decision highlights a renewed management focus and investment to ensure TCS is not left behind in the AI disruption wave.

Looking Ahead

TCS is now positioning AI as a core pillar of its future growth. With Amit Kapur’s appointment and a unified AI structure, the company is expected to reimagine services, deepen AI-driven domain solutions, forge new partnerships, and accelerate innovation. This move signals TCS’ intent to compete more aggressively in the global AI race and transform its service delivery model.
