The Indian government has confirmed the formation of the 8th Pay Commission, a decision that has set the stage for a significant salary hike for central government employees and pensioners. With discussions about the fitment factor intensifying, here’s a detailed look at the latest updates and what to expect.

Fitment Factor: How Much Will Salaries Increase?

Currently, under the 7th Pay Commission, the minimum basic salary for central government employees is ₹18,000, while pensioners receive a minimum basic pension of ₹9,000. The proposed fitment factors under the 8th Pay Commission suggest the following salary revisions:

  • 1.92 Fitment Factor: Minimum salary may increase to ₹34,560, and pension to ₹17,280.
  • 2.0 Fitment Factor: Minimum salary may increase to ₹36,000 (100% increase), and pension to ₹18,000.
  • 2.08 Fitment Factor: Minimum salary may increase to ₹37,440 (108% increase), and pension to ₹18,720.

Official Statements and Timeline

Union Minister of State for Finance, Pankaj Chaudhary, confirmed in a Rajya Sabha response on February 4, 2025, that the 8th Pay Commission has been approved. However, the appointment of its members and chairperson will be decided in due course.

Shiv Gopal Mishra, secretary of NC-JCM, indicated that:

  • The Pay Commission may be established by February 15, 2025.
  • The report could be finalized by November 30, 2025.
  • The government will review the report in December 2025.
  • The new salary structure may be implemented from January 2026.
