The iPhone has been stuck with 6GB of RAM since the iPhone 12 Pro, but that is set to change soon.
The iPhone 15 Pro, set to arrive next month is rumored to come with 8GB of RAM.
Testing both RAM options
X (formerly Twitter) user @URedditor has shared that the new A17 Bionic chip, set to power the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max has been tested with both 6GB and 8GB of RAM.
They said that they aren’t sure which RAM size was selected at the end.
However, speculation is that higher-storage tiers of the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max might come with 8GB of RAM for a faster and smoother iOS experience.
Going the Android route
It is common for Android devices to pack more RAM with higher storage options.
Apple’s own track record indicates an identical RAM amount across at least the Pro range to be more likely.
However, it might go the Android route- the iPad Pro is already one device in the Apple family to come with 8GB RAM as default which gets bumped to 16GB with the 1TB or 2TB storage variant.
Accommodating higher storage
The iPhone 15 Pro is also tipped to get a 2TB storage option which will require more RAM to handle the enhanced capacity.
The choice of RAM will also depend on what runs the new A17 Bionic chipset best, the chip powering the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max.
Possible scenarios
Since the company tested both RAM variants on the iPhone 15 Pro, the higher 8GB variant could be available on higher storage variants.
The base model iPhone 15 Pro with 256GB of storage could come with 6GB of RAM and the 512GB and higher storage variants could come with 8GB of RAM.
Another possibility is that only the 1TB and 2TB storage variants of the devices will get 8GB of RAM while the rest will house 6GB of RAM.
Apple may choose to get rid of the 6GB option altogether, by offering 8GB RAM on the iPhone 15 Pro as well.
Launch
Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 15 family on September 13.
Pre-orders for the new range are said to begin on September 15.
Rumored new features include enlarged batteries, USB-C charging ports and the Pro models’ Action button.
