The tech industry is undergoing another wave of major layoffs, with companies like Microsoft, Amazon, and Google cutting thousands of jobs due to economic instability and the growing influence of artificial intelligence (AI).

According to Layoffs.fyi, over 61,220 tech workers have been laid off in 2025 so far across 130 companies.

Microsoft Layoffs

Microsoft announced its largest round of layoffs since 2023, cutting 6,000 jobs on May 13—impacting around 3% of its global workforce of 228,000.

The layoffs at Microsoft affect employees across all levels and locations, including nearly 2,000 in Washington state alone.

Microsoft stated that the restructuring aims to keep the company competitive in a “dynamic marketplace.”

The company clarified that the cuts are not performance-based, but are intended to reduce management layers and increase the ratio of engineers to non-technical staff.

Earlier in January 2025, Microsoft also implemented performance-based layoffs and eliminated roles in its gaming and sales divisions.

Google Layoffs

Google has also resumed job cuts, recently laying off approximately 200 employees from its global business unit in early May.

This unit, which manages sales and partnerships, is being restructured to “drive greater collaboration” and improve customer service, according to Reuters.

Google’s recent layoffs follow earlier 2025 cuts, including hundreds of jobs in its Platforms & Devices unit (covering Android, Pixel, and Chrome) in April.

Additional layoffs at Google earlier this year involved voluntary exits and cuts in the cloud division in February.

In January 2023, Google’s parent company Alphabet laid off 12,000 workers, amounting to 6% of its global workforce.

Amazon Layoffs

Amazon also announced another round of layoffs in May, cutting around 100 jobs in its Devices and Services unit, which includes products like Alexa, Echo, Kindle, and Zoox.

Amazon stated these layoffs were necessary to align with its product roadmap and streamline operations.

These recent layoffs follow earlier workforce reductions at Amazon in 2025 and are part of a broader plan to eliminate “unnecessary layers” in its organizational structure.
