In Madhya Pradesh, the khaki uniform — long seen as a symbol of pride — has now become a symbol of survival. The Madhya Pradesh Staff Selection Board has received a staggering 9.76 lakh applications for just 7,500 police constable posts, marking one of the most competitive recruitment drives in recent years.

Thousands of Overqualified Candidates
What makes this recruitment extraordinary is the sheer diversity of applicants. Although the eligibility criterion is a 10th-grade pass, the applicant pool includes 42 PhD scholars, over 12,000 engineers, and thousands of graduates and postgraduates. For many, the constable’s post, with a monthly salary between ₹19,500 and ₹62,000, represents financial security in an uncertain economy.
Extended Deadlines Due to Massive Response
The online application process, which began on September 15, was initially set to close on September 29. However, due to the overwhelming number of applications, the deadline was extended to October 6. Officials confirmed that written exams will start on October 30, followed by physical tests conducted by the Madhya Pradesh Police. If all goes according to plan, 7,500 new constables will join the force by May or June next year.
Reflection of India’s Employment Struggles
This unprecedented rush highlights a deeper socioeconomic concern — India’s growing employment crisis, especially among educated youth. For thousands of job seekers, these constable positions are not merely government jobs; they are symbols of dignity and a rare opportunity for stability. The presence of highly qualified candidates underscores the widening gap between education and available employment opportunities.
Recruitment Across 11 Districts
To manage the massive turnout, the Madhya Pradesh Police will conduct the online examinations across 11 districts — Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur, Khandwa, Neemuch, Rewa, Ratlam, Sagar, Satna, Sidhi, and Ujjain. Authorities are ensuring strict supervision and transparent procedures to handle the large volume of candidates efficiently.
A Symbol of Hope Amid Desperation
Beyond statistics, this recruitment drive mirrors the aspirations and anxieties of a generation. For many applicants, wearing the khaki uniform is no longer just about authority or pride — it’s about survival, respect, and a steady livelihood in an increasingly uncertain job market.
