As quick-commerce leaders like Zepto Cafe, Zomato’s Bistro, and Swiggy Bolt race to deliver meals in just 10 minutes, health concerns are surfacing about the nutritional quality of such ultra-fast food options. Critics argue that the convenience of rapid delivery often comes at the cost of public health, as these meals are heavily processed and lack essential nutrients.

Expert Concerns

Orthopaedic surgeon and NutriByte Wellness co-founder Manan Vora recently highlighted the risks of 10-minute food delivery in a viral LinkedIn post. He explained that preparing meals in such a short timeframe necessitates the use of ultra-processed, pre-cooked, and frozen foods, which are reheated and delivered.

Mr. Vora pointed out that research links ultra-processed foods to several health risks:

  • Cancer risk: Increased by 12%.
  • Cardiovascular disease: Raised by 10%.
  • Obesity: Contributing to India’s 27.8% obesity rate among adults.
  • Diabetes: Triggered by sugar spikes.
  • Heart disease: Caused by trans fats.

He urged consumers to prioritize fresh, home-cooked meals over quick-delivery options, stating, “Don’t compromise your health for convenience.”

Public Reaction

The post resonated with many, sparking widespread agreement. One user commented, “Convenience at the cost of health is not worth it. We should wait a little longer for nutritious food rather than rely on ultra-processed meals.” Another warned of long-term consequences, stating, “The 10-minute delivery will result in chronic health issues over the next decade.”

Industry Criticism

Earlier this month, Shantanu Deshpande, CEO of Bombay Shaving Company, also criticized India’s growing reliance on fast food. Labeling it as an “epidemic,” he pointed to the health dangers of ultra-processed foods high in sugar and palm oil. Mr. Deshpande called for stricter regulations and a renewed focus on fresh, home-cooked food, urging food delivery platforms to improve the quality of ultra-fast meals.
