Action Taken Against 2.5 Crore Facebook, Instagram Posts By Meta To Comply With Indian IT Laws

The US social media giant Meta Platforms, in its monthly transparency report has stated that there were actions taken against 2.7 crore posts on Instagram as well as Facebook in July.

To throw some light on it, there were actions taken against 2.5 crore Facebook posts and 20 lakh Instagram posts in all during July, in compliance with the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021.

Here’s a breakdown of actions taken against the posts on the two social media platforms.

• Action was taken against 1.73 crore spam content on Facebook.
• 27 lakh posts related to ‘adult nudity and sexual activity’ and 23 lakh ones related to ‘violent and graphic content’ related content were taken down by Facebook.
• Most content on Instagram and Facebook violated the ‘suicide and self injury’ policy, along with ‘adult nudity and sexual activity’ content and ‘violent and graphic content’.
• Regarding such posts, Meta received 626 complaints from Facebook users and 1,033 complaints from Instagram users.
• Almost 10 lakh, 9.98 lakh to be exact, posts were recognised on the lines of “Dangerous Organizations and Individuals: Terrorism” related content and 99.8% of them were taken down by Meta on its platforms.

“Between 1st and 31st July, we received 626 reports through the Indian grievance mechanism, and we responded to 100 per cent of these 626 reports. Of these incoming reports, we provided tools for users to resolve their issues in 603 cases,” said the Meta report.

It added that 185 users complained that their accounts were hacked, in extension to ‘lost access to a page or group’ they managed.

“Of the other 88 reports where specialised review was needed, we reviewed content as per our policies, and we took action on 35 reports in total,” the report said.
