Against the herd mentality

Gurnani has expressed his opinion in favor of moonlighting, saying that he might consider it for his employees.

His words come after CEOs in other top companies voiced their disapproval of moonlighting.

Recently Wipro CEO Rishad Premji did so, followed by N Ganapathy Subramaniam of TCS who called it an ‘ethical issue’ in the corporate sector.

Progressive stance

Gurnani spoke with Business Today at India @ 100 Economy Summit and said that he might make moonlighting a policy in his company if given a chance, but the workers have to be on board.

He elaborated that he has no issues with someone moonlighting if they are delivering in terms of efficiency and productivity and as long as they are not committing fraud.

If someone wants to go about moonlighting, they should be upfront about it instead of concealing it, he said.

Wipro and TCS

On the contrary, Wipro CEO Rishad Premji bluntly put it- “This is cheating – plain and simple.”

TCS COO N Ganapathy Subramaniam fell on the same side as Premji, calling it an “ethical issue” and that “we need to inculcate the ethics and (the idea of) being right and if we make something like this for short-term gains, in the long-term we will lose out.”

Industry norms

According to Indian industry norms employees are forbidden by most companies to take up any other work while they are working with the organization.

They may not take up any side projects or freelance work.

Some firms go as far as to put a clause in their employment letter that clearly mentions that they cannot take any secondary job.

If one is caught, the company either terminates or takes strict legal actions against them.

Change on the horizon?

However, the tide seems to be turning as of late.

Many companies are now showing interest in the idea of moonlighting and are open to flexible working norms.

For example, Swiggy has adopted the “industry first policy”, allowing their employees to take up side jobs or secondary jobs.
