Spectrum auction bid

The telco was the highest bidder at the recently concluded spectrum auction and grabbed the premium 700MHz band, which is claimed to provide better coverage using lesser towers.

Post the auction, newly appointed Jio Chairman Akash Ambani announced that the company would celebrate the ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’ with the 5G rollout, hinting at a launch on Independence day.

Rollout

If the rollout does take place on August 15, it will most probably be a pilot test in metros first.

That means the final full scale roll out could only take place by the end of this year or longer.

Nine Indian cities will get to experience 5G first- Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Chennai, Lucknow, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, and Jamnagar.

It’s not an exhaustive list and may include other cities like Pune, Chandigarh, Gurugram, and Gandhinagar.

Full country coverage- 22 circles

As mentioned earlier, Jio bought the coveted 700MHz band.

This covers all the 22 circles in India.

For those unversed the DoT has divided India into 22 circles or geographical areas to make it easy to assign spectrum and allow communication.

Do you need a new 5G sim to get the services?

There is no information with regards to the question.

However when India transitioned from 3G to 4G, users had to get a new 4G sim to enjoy the services.

Price

There has been no word on the pricing either.

However going by the 4G example, plans with maximum benefits are priced between Rs 400 to Rs 500.

So we can easily expect the 5G prepaid plans to start from Rs 500 and above.
