Confirmed! Maruti’s 1st Ever Electric Car Will Launch In This Year; Rs 11,000 Crore Investment Planned

Maruti Suzuki’s first electric vehicle will arrive in 2025.

First appearance

It might make its first appearance in its concept form at the 2023 Auto Expo.

Production will begin from 2024-25 at the company’s Gujarat facility.

The company has plans to expand its production facilities in coming years.

Expanding production

It will set up two new manufacturing plants at IMT Kharkhoda in Sonipat, Haryana with an investment of Rs 11,000 crore in the first phase.

After the first unit is established in 2025, the second one will come a year later.

The company hasn’t yet revealed details of its first EV except that it will be priced above Rs 10 lakh as EV technology and batteries are expensive.

Development

The carmaker has also confirmed that the vehicle has been tested long enough to ensure that it meets market-specific requirements and adapt to Indian weather conditions.

Rumors suggest that the car will be a mid-size SUV co-developed by Suzuki and Toyota.

It will be designed on Toyota’s heavily localized DNGA modular platform that supports electric powertrains.

Battery, range, hybrid powertrain

It might be offered with two battery options – 48kWh and 59kWh.

The former will deliver a range of around 400km, the latter one will promise 500km.

The new EV could be the electric iteration of the Grand Vitara that’s due for September this year.

It will be the first Maruti Suzuki model to come with a strong hybrid powertrain.

It could feature the 1.5L TNGA petrol with Intelligent Hybrid tech and 1.5L K15C Dualjet with Smart Hybrid system options.

Pricing, competition

The Grand Vitara SUV model lineup will be spread across four trims (Sigma, Delta, Zeta and Alpha) and is expected to cost between Rs 9.50 lakh – Rs 15.50 lakh (all, ex-showroom).

Upon launch, the new electric vehicle will compete against the current best-selling Tata Nexon EV and MG ZS EV.
