Customers of the country’s largest public sector lender State Bank of India (SBI) have taken to the microblogging platform Twitter to voice inconvenience after several bank accounts were frozen, or as these customers have mentioned on the social platform, the accounts have been ‘put on STOP’ by the bank.

According to SBI, this is done as such customers have failed to comply with the know-your-customer (KYC) norms/regulations of the bank, which needs to be updated periodically.

SBI Responds to Customers For Suspending Accounts

The public sector lender SBI has suspended the accounts of multiple bank customers, in relation to failure with the KYC norms of the bank. These customers did not update their KYC.

As a result, such bank customers have taken to Twitter to register complaints regarding the same, while tagging SBI’s official handle.

One such customer tweeted tagging SBI, “My account has been put on STOP because of KYC overdue. No one asked me for KYC so why the hell my account put on STOP mode. Is everyone fool in SBI ?”

To such customer queries, the bank has responded on the microblogging platform, “As per RBI Mandate, customers are supposed get their KYC updated periodically. Hence, customers whose KYC updates are due are notified through many channels, one of them being SMS. 

Based on this notification one can either visit any of our Branches to update their KYC details or send a copy for their KYC Documents to their Branch email id through your registered mail id (if the KYC details are unchanged). Hope this clarifies your doubt.”

To another customer, the bank has responded, “We would like to inform you that KYC is an ongoing exercise conducted at regular intervals. It seems that your account is due for KYC, hence the message has been forwarded to you. Kindly visit the branch and get it done for the smooth functioning of the account.”

Steps to Update SBI KYC Details

In order to continue using your SBI accounts, customers need to update their KYC details regularly. This can be done by emailing their verification copy and address proof to their bank’s branch.

The required identification proof for individuals include:

  • Passport
  • Voter’s Identity Card
  • Aadhaar Card/Letter
  • Driving License
  • PAN Card
  • NREGA Card
  • Any document pointing identity and address proof, either current or permanent.
