Maruti Suzuki, in partnership with Toyota, is developing a new midsize SUV for India.

Toyota will be responsible for the manufacturing aspect for both brands.

It is codenamed YFG for the Maruti version and D22 for the Toyota one.

It has been spied on test runs which have shown glimpses of its exterior and interior.

Dashboard

The dashboard design is brand new, with a large floating-type touchscreen infotainment system in the centre.

This will likely be a 9-inch touch screen unit, running on the brand’s new SmartPlay Pro Plus system.

A multi-functional steering wheel can also be spotted which comes with integrated controls for the audio and cruise control systems.

Features

It is now certain that the SUV will get a Head-Up Display (HUD) and 360-degree parking camera.

Features like front ventilated seats, a 360-degree camera, leatherette upholstery, connected car tech, and idle start/stop can also be expected.

Powertrain

The vehicle gets a blue engine start/stop button, which could signify a strong hybrid powertrain.

Speculations say that it will be powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine with mild-hybrid technology that was recently tweaked and introduced on the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and Maruti Suzuki XL6.

It could also get a mild-hybrid powertrain or a turbo-petrol engine option.

Ample Space

There are no further details on powertrain at the moment..

The space or roominess of the car appears to be fairly adequate, comparable to Hyundai Creta and significantly better than the outgoing Maruti S-Cross.

Platform

It is also being hinted that the YFG will be built on Suzuki’s Global-C platform, and not on Toyota’s DNGA platform.

This is because the test mule resembles the Suzuki Vitara available in international markets.

However, the front and rear sections have been thoroughly restyled for the Indian market.

Launch, Competition

Toyota’s version – codenamed ‘D22’ – will launch in india around the same time as Maruti’s version, i.e., around the Diwali festive season this year.

Both will differ in interior and exterior styling in order to remain distinct from the other.

Upon launch, the YFG will compete against the Hyundai Creta, MG Astor, Kia Seltos, Volkswagen Taigun, and Skoda Kushaq.
