Rail Passengers Will Pay 6-Times Penalty For Carrying Extra Luggage In Trains: Check How Much Luggage Is Allowed?

Traveling in trains now will not be much different than travelling by air, in terms of luggage allowance. What we mean is, passengers traveling in Indian Railways will now have to shell out extra bucks for carrying luggage in excess of the permissible weight limits.

Yes, you read it right.

The national transporter, Indian Railways, has recently deployed some rules related to carrying luggage in trains, depending upon the train compartment one is traveling from.

Here’s everything you need to know about the luggage limits and the development.

Luggage Limits Installed by Indian Railways

In a recent tweet on the micro-blogging site Twitter, the Ministry of Railways stated (in Hindi), “If the luggage is more, the pleasures of the journey will be reduced! Do not carry excess luggage while traveling in trains. In case of excess baggage, book the luggage with the help of the parcel office.”

Passengers carrying luggages in excess weight of the permissible limit will now have to pay about six-times more than the normal price rates.

According to the new rules, a passenger traveling in AC First Class can carry up to 70 kg of luggage on free allowance; an AC 2-Tier sleeper passenger will be allowed to carry no more than 50 kg of luggage, an AC 3-tier sleeper passenger a maximum of 40 kg luggage, up to 40 kg for a Sleeper class traveler and a Second class Railways traveller will be allowed to carry up to 35 kg luggage in free allowance.

Reports suggest that passengers travelling with excess and un-booked luggage will have to pay about six-times the baggage rate, meaning, somebody travelling 500 km with an  excess baggage of 40 kg will have to pay just Rs 109, but if caught, will have to shell out a penalty of Rs 654.

Additionally, the minimum charge for luggage is Rs 30, stated sources.

One must present the luggage at the luggage office of the booking station no later than 30 minutes ahead of the time of departure. They can also book the luggage while booking their tickets.
