However, there are concerns over surging prices of essential items and unemployment.

The survey was conducted by LocalCircles and 64,000 people were polled.

67% of them believe that the government has met or exceeded expectations in the second term.

Pandemic Management

This is a significant jump from 51% last year when the pandemic’s second wave overwhelmed hospitals and crematoriums.

It was 62% in 2020 when the pandemic started.

The people surveyed said that the government was better prepared to handle a third wave and had effectively managed the economy.

Unemployment

Concerns also lingered over unemployment staying around 7% since the start of the year with 47% saying that it hasn’t been addressed.

At the same time there is also an increase in confidence in the administration’s handling of joblessness with 37% showing approval.

This is a rise from 27% in 2021 and 29% in 2020 when the drastic lockdowns caused migrant workers to lose their jobs, though a rural jobs guarantee program helped.

Inflation Worries

The growing approval comes in the backdrop of retail inflation which is tracking an eight-year high.

Since this is a politically sensitive issue, the government started restricting exports of wheat and sugar and reining in any further price increases.

73% of Indians said that the price of essential commodities and living costs hasn’t reduced in the past three years.

This is an ever present problem for Modi who is seeking a third term in elections due in 2024.
