Hyundai India Reports 66% Increase In Sale Of New Cars; But Tata Motors Still Beats Hyundai To Become 2nd Biggest Auto Company

Hyundai India reports improved sales for the month of May 2022 with total sales up at 51,263 units from 30,703 units a year earlier. 

Improvement In Sales Figures 

Last month sales stood in the green as predicted for the most part owing to low base sales a year earlier.

A year ago, the market trend impacted most in the marketplace caused by the severity of a Covid-19 wave, which brought one and all to a standstill, and impacted auto production and sales alike. 

But this year, things look upbeat as Hyundai India domestic sales May 2022 reports domestic sales at 42,293 units, up from 25,001 units. 

The volume gain is understandably high at 17,292 units owing to low base sales.

The car maker’s MoM sales fell from 44k units as the decline is capped at below 4 percent at volume loss of 1,708 units.

Coming to the Exports for the month, it is pegged at just below 9k units at 8,970 units, up from 5,702 units YoY. 

Tata Motors Taking Second Position

When it comes to Cumulative sales, it is up at 51,263 units from 30,703 units. So, the volume gain stood at just over 20.5k units.

It appears that for the second time in 6 months, Hyundai has lost its No 2 spot to Tata Motors. 

Prior to this, it happened in Dec 2021 when Hyundai had slipped to No 3.

However, it regained its No 2 position in Jan 2022 and remained there until last month. 

In May 2022, it lost the position to Tata Motors in sales, which has registered over 43k sales in the domestic market. 

It seems that Tata has beaten Hyundai by 1,048 units in May 2022.

Biannual Maintenance Shutdown Affecting Numbers

Notably, the numbers for last month don’t reveal much. 

Reportedly, its both HMI plants in Chennai underwent scheduled biannual maintenance shut down. 

Which resulted in no production for 6 days in May 2022 (16th May to 21st May). 

Obviously, the vehicle availability was impacted, and affected the  May sales numbers (domestic, and exports).

From June 2022, production is to be enhanced and the carmanke would cater to pending demand for domestic and export markets in a timely manner, and effectively address long waiting customers.
