Helmet Compulsory For Pillion Riders In Mumbai; Penalty & License Suspension If Found Without Helmet

If you are a Mumbaikar and are getting through the city with a bike, this news is for you! You will be required to wear a helmet even if you are riding pillion on a two-wheeler.

In case you are found without a helmet, you will be penalized.

Mumbai Police Makes Helmet Compulsory For Pillion Rider 

The Mumbai Traffic Police has also issued a notification that announced this rule. Helmets will now be compulsory for back seat riders. A period of 15 days will be allotted to Mumbai citizens in order to start following this rule, i.e., this rule will be effective from June 9.

As per the tweet by MumbaI Traffic Police, “Persons riding a 2-wheeler i.e both the rider and pillion are hereby urged to wear a helmet. As per MVA, action will be taken in case of violation of this rule for pillion rider as well. We will start implementing after 15 days from now. #WearAHelmet 

#PillionAsWell”

As per reports, wearing a helmet has always been compulsory for pillion riders under the Motor Vehicle Act.

Mumbai Police Commissioner Sanjay Pandey stated that this rule is already being followed in the entire world end several cities in India as well. Apparently this decision has been taken as the number of pillion riders suffering injuries in the road accidents that involve two wheelers is on the rise

Rs. 500 Fine For Non-Compliance

Fine for those who break this rule will be Rs. 500 along with the suspension of their driving license for three months. 

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Raj Tilak Roshan said, “We analysed recent data of two-wheeler related accidents and found that in almost all cases, the pillion riders suffered injuries. Making helmets mandatory affixes a responsibility on the pillion riders which will contribute towards a decrease in injuries in accidents.”

The Deputy Commissioner has also said that enforcing this rule is the primary responsibility of traffic police personnel. Also, they can ask for help from the police station personnel whenever needed.

We had also reported that the Mumbai traffic police had put together a list of all rash drivers and has now decided to fine them for their e-challans.

Sources from RTO (Regional Transport Office) have informed that they are yet to receive a total penalty of Rs 317 crores on e-challans.
