Apple India Adapts UPI, Ditches Credit/Debit Card: Stops Storing Card Details, Stops Accepting Card Payments

Users of Apple devices will no longer be able to make payments for purchases or make subscriptions on the App store or other services of the tech major, as the US-based giant has announced to comply with the new card storage guidelines of RBI.

The central bank’s new card storage guidelines will come into effect starting June 1, 2022, and the tech giant has intimated this update in payment method to its customers via email.

Apple to No Longer Accept Card Payments from Indian Customers

The US tech giant Apple has emailed its customers in India that it would no longer store their card information on file, adding that no payments will be accepted henceforth via debit and credit cards for the purchase of purchases or subscriptions on the App store or other Apple services.

The move comes as the company aligns its functioning in India as per the central bank RBI’s new card storage guidelines, coming into effect shortly.

Instead, Apple India customers can link their UPI id/information or net banking details for conducting payments on the platform, in order to avoid interruptions. Customers can also use Apple Id to make payments, by adding funds.

However, the company has clarified that the customers’  subscriptions will continue as long as they have a sufficient balance.

It added that for an Apple Music, TV+, iCloud+ or third-party subscriber, if the company is not able to renew the customer’s subscription, it will automatically expire.

“In the light of the upcoming RBI regulations, starting June 1, credit and debit cards can no longer be used for purchases or subscriptions on the App store or other Apple services. Apple will no longer store card information on file – protecting your payment method is our top priority,” read Apple’s email sent to its Indian customers.
