Students Of Class 1 To Class 8 Will Be Directly Promoted, Without Any Exam Or Marks In This State

Gujarat Government has announced that it will promote all students from Classes 1 to 8 regardless of the marks they scored due to disruptions caused by the pandemic.

Pandemic Struggles

This is in spite of the offline exams already being conducted this year.

However, for a majority of primary and upper primary class students, classes took place in online mode due to the pandemic. 

School closures on multiple occasions worsened the matter.

Several students and parents were anxious regarding the annual exams that would be held this year.

In order to placate them, the State Government decided to implement mass promotion.

Second Year In A Row

Now all school students from Class 1 to Class 8 will be promoted to the next academic grade regardless of their annual exam scores.

This is the second consecutive year that the state is promoting students en masse.

Schools in the state followed this pattern last year as well.

Students were promoted to next grade due to the cancellation of exams owing to the pandemic.

The decision has been made in the interest of a large number of students.

Marks Scored No Bar

The latest notice clarifies, “As the second semester (annual) examination has been completed as per the routine in primary schools, the effect of the result of the examination will not have to be applied on the class promotion of the students.” 

Essentially means that although the second semester exams have taken place as per routine, the scores will have no effect on whether the student will pass since they will be promoted regardless.

All government or private schools affiliated with the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) will have to abide by this decision.

According to a previous notice issued by the government, students had to be promoted based on their marks in the annual exams. 

This has now been disregarded and instead students of Classes 1 to 8 will be mass promoted.

Puducherry In Similar Situation

Gujarat isn’t the only state making the move. 

Last week, the Puducherry government announced that it will promote all students of classes 1 to 9 of the academic year 2021-22.

Puducherry’s joint director of school education, G Sivagami ordered that no student will be marked as failed in any school even in cases of non-payment of fees or shortage of attendance.

Plus Two Results Awaited

Gujarat is now preparing to release class 12 science stream results which are likely to be released by May 20 and class 10 results in the first week of June.

The board exams were conducted in physical mode between March 28 and April 12 and the assessment began in April.

Grading System

The evaluation process is reported to have been almost completed.

Over 15 lakh students including 8 lakh of class 10 and 7 lakh of class 12 had appeared for the board exam this year. 

In order to pass, students have to score at least a grade D. Those who get a grade E have to appear in the compartment exams whereas students getting a grade F have to repeat the class.
