As many as 18.05 lakh Indian accounts have been banned on Whatsapp in a single month of March.

These accounts have been banned as complaints have been received about these accounts through grievances channels and also through Whatsapp’s own mechanism to prevent and detect violations.

Whatsapp Bans 18.05 Lakh Accounts in March

A monthly report published by Whatsapp has shared these insights and in February, this number stood at 14.26 lakh.

The 18.05 lakh Indian accounts have been banned by Whatsapp during March 1-31, 2022, using the “abuse detection approach, which also includes action taken in furtherance to negative feedback received from users…”

The report states that 597 grievance reports were received, and 74 accounts were “actioned” in March 2022. 407 reports of the total received were related to “ban appeal” whereas, the others were in the categories of account support, product support and safety, among others.

How To Register A Complaint About Whatsapp Accounts?

You can send emails to [email protected] about violations of WhatsApp’s Terms of Service. You can also ask questions about accounts on Whatsapp. Mails can also be sent to the India Grievance Officer through the post.

In the email, you need to include the complaint/concern and an electronic signature. If your complaint is about a specific account on Whatsapp, you need to include the phone number in full international format, which should also include the country code.

When you report an account, WhatsApp receives the last five messages that have been sent to you through the app. Note that the account you are reporting will not be notified. Whatsapp will also receive information about the reported group or user ID, information on when the message was sent, and the type of message sent (image, video, text, etc.).

Malpractices To Avoid

Doing the following could get your account banned or worse:

  • Impersonating someone and creating a fake account of another person
  • Send too many messages to someone who is not in your contacts
  • Use third-party apps like WhatsApp Delta, GBWhatsApp, WhatsApp Plus, etc.
  • If you are using any, delete them since WhatsApp doesn’t permit users to communicate over such apps due to privacy concerns.
  • Sending porn clips, threat or defamatory messages
  • Sending fake messages or videos that promote violence.
