Netflix India Will Terminate Upto 90% Indian Shows, Movies! Here’s The Reason Why?

Update: Netflix India has issued a statement, denying this report of 90% Indian shows being terminated due to less growth. In a statement, Netflix India said, “Some of our upcoming titles include Anil Kapoor and Harshvardhan Kapoor starrer, Thar, Vishal Bhardwaj’s Khufiya and the returning seasons of Delhi Crime, Masaba Masaba, She and many more. “

Netflix India has clarified that they have never, ever shared this information about reducing content for Indian users. Infact, they are now more aggresive and determined to launch newer shows and movies, for India.

In a letter to shareholders, they had said: “We’re making good progress in APAC where we are seeing nice growth in a variety of markets including Japan, India, Philippines, Thailand and Taiwan. “

Lately, Netflix seems to be pressing the panic button considering it hasn’t had the best of times recently.

Dwindling Numbers, Rating and Subscribers falling

Presently, the OTT giant is witnessing dwindling numbers all across the board.

On top of that both rating and subscribers falling drastically in India and more so in western countries.

The American streaming firm’s customer base fell by 200,000 subscribers during the January-March period, as mentioned in its quarterly earnings report released Tuesday.

Netflix Yet To Turn Over A Profit

The situation accounts for the major chunk of Netflix’s user-base.

The fall has been even more worrying while sticking to their business in India.

As word is that the OTT firm is yet to turn over a profit for a single financial year ever since its inception in the country.

Taking Drastic Steps

Now, it seems that the last fall was also the last straw as now speculations are making rounds that Netflix India is set to take some drastic steps in a bid to stem the decline.

Netflix is apparently in the process of dropping 90% of its upcoming slate of Indian web series and movies, according to a well-placed source within the industry.

Speculations suggest that Netflix India now wants to try a newer, more commercial approach to its content.

Now, it is planning to diverge from the serious, dark, artistic path which it was traversing till now in a bid to entice viewers.

As most of what’s on its slate falls in the former category, the OTT platform is supposedly scrapping a large chunk of that content.

It has repeatedly been ordered for massive portions of the show to be reshot.

Again, one of the major reasons behind the prolonged delay besides the earlier impediments due to dual lockdowns emanating from the COVID-19 pandemic.
