WhatsApp users will soon be able to hide the “last seen” status from specific contacts.

“Last seen” tells one when a user last checked their app.

How It Works

People can guess whether the user might have seen a message, even if read receipts are turned off.

The new feature means that specified contacts will not be able to see when the user was last seen since this status will be hidden.

Currently, users have the option between not showing anyone their status or only to numbers in their phone book.

How To?

  • Navigate to Settings
  • Tap on Account
  • Select Privacy
  • Select the option from, “Everyone,” “My Contacts,” “Nobody,” and “My Contacts Except…”.

It should be noted that if users disable the last seen for specific contacts, they will not be able to see theirs.

Roll Out

The feature helps since the user will no longer have to hide their online status from everyone.

They can simply pick who they want to exclude from their phone book.

This is currently being tested in beta versions so there’s no telling when the public release will be.

However, going by typical update timelines it can be expected to go live in the coming months.

Restrict Profile, About Access

Also in the works are controls for ‘Profile Photos’ and ‘About’ that lets users limit who views their profile photo or the about section.

This is a big privacy measure that many people have requested the platform for sometime.

It provides enhanced privacy for those who don’t want to be visible to strangers, especially now that it has become a viable business platform.
