Meanwhile in Delhi and Bengaluru the second shot has been administered to fewer than 95% of their population.

By Tuesday the entirety of Mumbai’s adult population of 92.39 lakh people were vaccinated with two doses of Covid-19 vaccine.

It took fifteen months since the start of the vaccination drive to achieve this major milestone.

Numbers Breakdown

Officials of the civic body confirmed that thus far 1,02,96,917 first doses have been administered in the 18 plus segment- 111 per cent vaccination of this age group.

In the 12 plus population, the city has achieved 93 per cent vaccination.

So far, 94,92,511 people have been given the second dose of the vaccine out of the originally targeted 1,02,44,843 people.

Highest Coverage In State

In doing so, it has become the first major city in the country to fully vaccinate 100% of its citizens.

It also has the highest vaccination coverage among all the 36 districts in Maharashtra.

Community Participation And Awareness

Suresh Kakani, BMC’s additional municipal commissioner said that Mumbai had accomplished what it did thanks to community participation and awareness about the role of immunisation.

The officials said that initially they had received lukewarm responses to vaccination which improved gradually.

Now, the city has 350 vaccination centres where retired nurses have also been roped in for vaccination.

Mumbai crossed vaccination coverage of 50 percent of its population last October.

Stages Of Vaxx Drive In Mumbai

Since the commencement of the mass immunisation programme in January 2021 the city has administered 2.05 crore Covid-19 vaccine doses

Initially healthcare workers were made eligible for the vaccine followed by frontline workers.

Then from March 2021, all senior citizens were made eligible.

Then from May 2021, all citizens above 18 years of age were made eligible for the jab.

And now, as of April 2022, 9,236,000 eligible citizens have been fully vaccinated with both the doses.

Out of this 4.15 lakh are third doses (precautionary doses).

Last-Mile Coverage

Dr Shashank Joshi, member of the state Covid task force said that all districts should voluntarily aim for 100% adult vaccination in order to stay ahead of new variants,

Dr Mangala Gomare, BMC executive health officer meanwhile said that they will not slow down in their mission to accomplish widespread coverage.

She said that NGOs have been roped in to vaccinate the bedridden, individuals without identity proof documents, and the transgender community to ensure no one was left behind.
