Delhi Gets India’s Cheapest EV Charging Network: Pay Rs 2/Unit, 85% Cheaper Than Other States

The Power Minister of Delhi Satyendar Jain recently announced that the state government is going to be establishing around a hundred EV charging stations. The charging costs will be the cheapest at Rs. 2 per unit by 27th June.

These efforts are a part of Delhi Government’s goal to push mass adoption of electric vehicles in the state. The process of setting up a dedicated electric vehicle (EV) cell has also been started by the government. This is done by inviting applications for appointment of a chief executive officer and professionals to handle its work on a day-to-day basis. The Delhi Transport Infrastructure Development Corporation (DTIDC) has invited applicants to apply for the post of a chief executive officer or project manager, two deputy directors and two young professionals on contract basis for the duration of two years.

The EV policy 

The EV policy had been implemented on 7th August, 2020 with the goal of making Delhi the ‘electric vehicle capital’ of India. The main aim that the policy wants to achieve is to accelerate the pace of adoption of electric vehicles across different segments, especially in the mass category of two-wheelers, public or shared transport vehicles and goods carriers. The primary goal of the EV Cell is going to be supporting and accelerating the implementation of the electric vehicle policy.

Cities with rapid EV sector development 

Government’s sustained efforts have resulted in a 2.5 times increase in the number of charging stations in nine megacities — Surat, Pune, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Chennai in the last four months, according to a power ministry statement.

More focus on megacities

As per the statement, 678 more public EV charging stations have been installed between October 2021 and January 2022 in these cities. Approximately 940 of India’s 1,640 public EV chargers are in these cities. The government has given more attention at least initially to the nine megacities with a population of over 4 million.

In February, the Ministry of Power issued the revised and consolidated Guidelines and Standards for EV charging infrastructure. The Government of India has launched multiple initiatives with the goal of promoting the manufacturing and adoption of EVs in India.
