Infosys Founder Narayana Murthy Wants All Employees Back To Office; Says Work From Home Is Bad For Productivity

With the Covid-19 pandemic dropping its severity lately, offices and office spaces are reopening and calling back their employees, who had well accepted the work from home norm as a new professional lifestyle.

While many companies, including IT companies are calling their employees on a hybrid work from office basis, which means to come to the office location only on some days a week while work from home on the remaining days, some companies are rigid on going back to the normal, meaning calling back their employees to offices on a full-time, everyday basis.

One such key personality, who is a strong believer of work from office culture is the IT giant Infosys’ founder N R Narayana Murthy.

Murthy, in a summit organized by DH on Friday, stated that he wasn’t a great fan of the work from home work culture, citing the practice’s impact on company culture, stated a DH report,

The information technology veteran Narayana Murthy noted, “When people work from home, that institutional culture will slowly become weaker and weaker.”

He stated that in a country like India, where not every employee can manage to have a separate room to work, with many employees living in a multi-generational household, and not having a great internet connectivity, the concept of work from home does not bring out its best potential.

He compared India’s productivity to Bangladesh’s, stating that despite being formed only over 40 years, the latter’s per capita income exceeded India’s. Bangladesh per capita income stood at $2,227, China’s at $12,551, while India’s figure stood at $1,900.

“My wish is that all the companies get back to office at the earliest,” added the industry veteran.

Mixing the two is not a good idea on a long-term basis. Yeah, I understand that there is no alternative therefore, we have adapted. But this should be a short-term solution.”
