Development

Both will share the platform but will have different styling across exteriors and interiors.

The cars will be built on Toyota’s low-cost DNGA (Daihatsu New Generation Architecture) platform which is designed for emerging markets.

Notably, the midsize SUVs will be built from scratch, without relying on any past models.

The carmakers intend to offer something unique and new in order to compete against the Creta and Seltos.

Second Attempt After S-Cross

Maruti has its foot in the door with the S-Cross but its performance has been underwhelming.

It doesn’t seem to have any overt flaws and is well equipped, however it doesn’t seem to be perceived as an SUV..

A new gen is in the works but is unlikely to make waves.

So for Maruti, leading with a rebadged version of a new Toyota midsize SUV has a higher chance of success.

Powertrain, USPs

They will run on Toyota’s strong hybrid system, similar to the one used with the Camry.

This platform allows the vehicle to run on only electric power for short durations.

This can be useful in heavy traffic situations and will also boost fuel economy.

This powertrain can be an important USP for Maruti-Toyota in the midsize SUV space.

It will be offered with  a 1.5-litre petrol only option so no diesel engine at launch.

Features

In order to compete with the big players, the SUVs will come loaded with features, advanced features including connectivity tech.

Its features list may include cruise control, multi-function steering wheel, multi-information display, automatic climate control, keyless entry and much more.

Launch, Price

Prototype production could start in the next 2-3 months with the aim to launch around the festive season or Diwali.

Maruti’s version may be the first to hit the roads followed by Toyota’s model.

It is expected to be priced in the range of Rs 12-16 lakh.
