In order to keep a check on the environment health, the Government has drafted a rule, according to which any construction site, be it commercial or residential in nature, will have to plant at least one tree in an area of 80 metre square, ensuring that the worked upon plot hosts at least 10% of green life in it.
This compulsion lies not only for new construction projects of building or residential areas but also extends to those sites that cover expansion and/or renovation of existing buildings.

Draft Rules for Planting Trees on Construction Sites
According to the draft notification of Building Construction Environment Management Regulations, 2022, issued by the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change on Feb 28, here are some of the rules abiding which will be compulsory to get a go ahead for the completion of construction projects.
- Every construction site will have to plant at least 1 tree within an 80 square metre area.
- The rule will be applicable on any construction/building site expanding over at least a 5,000 square metre area,
- It will also cover those sites where expansion or renovation of buildings work is conducted.
- Topsoil, in case of constructing roads, buildings, paved areas and external services, will be allowed to be stripped only up to a permitted depth of 20 cm.
- The soil will be needed to be stockpiled in designated areas and reapplied during the plantation of the proposed vegetation on the sites, adds a news report.
- On every site, there needs on-site plants, with a 100% wastewater treatment capability installed, if a common sewage plant in the area is not already available.
- Mandatory presence of ground water recharge systems or rainwater harvesting systems must be present compulsorily on such construction sites.
- Construction work on water bodies and wetlands will not be allowed.
- Construction workers will not be allowed to use groundwater without prior approval from the Central Ground Water Authority’s approval.
